There were four main causes for imperialism
  1. The first cause for imperialims was for economic interests, the desire to sell goods and to aqquire natural resources. Europeans wanted access to rubber, petroleum, magnese, and palm oil. They needed these resources for the machines and upkeep needed in tcountries he Industrial Revolution. The new land also provided more space for the growing population and consumors for goods.
The final reason was that the nations of the west that were conquering other nations said Social Darwinism gave them the right. They thought they thought they were superior than the natives of the countries they counquered. They said that it was nature's way of bettering the world.

Imperialism Through the Europeans eyes

Europeans justified their taking of Africa by saying that they were helping those whose countries they were taking. They said that they had the right to "help" them because they were a more developed country. "If some initial expense is incurred, is it not justified by the ultimate gain?" as Capt. F. D. Lugard said about the rise of the Eastern African Emprie. Capt. Lugard would have said this because he most likely thought that it was okay if some people died along the way of Western domination.

Through the Victim's Eyes

The victims of imperialism lost hundreds of years of culture and history just because the Europeans thought that their culture and history would be better for the victims. The Europeans thought that they were better than the victims and consequently the victims were belittled. In the end many of the natives were taken captive and sold of into slavery.

Domination

The Europeans easily took over foreign countries with their superior weapons and better tactics. Weapons such as the Maxim machine gun helped the Europeans easily dominate. While the Europeans had these advantages the natives were at a disadvantage. They had inferior weapons and the main empires were in decline. There were also many civil wars going on throughout Africa.

The Lasting Effects

There are many effects that Imperialism has had throughout the world, some for the better but some for the worse. Throughout India Britian improved the transportation with new roads and railroads. The British also brought new medicines to India and reconstructed the legal system. But not all of the effects were good. In Africa there were many rebellions that left the continent devastated. These rebellions have led to more uprisings and even lasting civil wars in African countries today. The slave trade also had a large impact on the Africans seperating people from their families and leaving new generations clueless about their heritage. Still today there are many problems that occured due to Imperialism.
